Don't sweat the choice of "which Carnival ship in Miami"
Miami is Carnival's homeport and is the most competitive cruise market in the world. Carnival has their top ships in the market – you will find relatively little difference between most of them and you are safe to focus more on price and itinerary rather than the quality of the ship. The only exception is the ship on the Bahamas cruise circuit which is a bit older. (updated February 2011)
Flight Arrival and Departure Times
If you are flying in to Miami International Airport (MIA) or Ft. Lauderdale Airport (FLL) on the day of your cruise make sure you allow plenty of time to get to the ship. Carnival recommends arriving in to FLL by 2:00 PM and MIA by 2:30 PM at the latest on the day of embarkation. After your cruise, your flight should not leave before 11:30 AM from MIA and 12:00 PM from FLL. (verified January 2011)
Parking at the Port of Miami
Be prepared to pay $20 a day to park in one of 3 covered garages. You will pay upfront (cash, major credit card or US traveler's check only) – not when you leave.(verified February 2010)
Other Parking Options
There are several offsite parking lots with shuttles to the Miami port – the savings can be significant. If you are arriving by car the night before your cruise, several of the hotels in the area may let you leave your car in their lot while you cruise. However, you will need to stay at least one night before your cruise – look for "Park 'n Stay" rates advertised by the hotel. These hotels usually have a shuttle to take you to and from the cruise port. (verified April 2009)
Taxi from Miami International Airport (MIA) to the Port of Miami
Don't get ripped off – the cab driver should charge you a flat $24 rate each way. Cruise Line transfers are $16 per person each way so if there are at least 2 people traveling, a taxi is much more cost efficient. (verified November 2009)
Towncar to the Port of Miami
When booking a town car or private limo service to the port be sure to ask about any additional fees. The local port authority charges limo companies a fee to pick up at the port which many pass on to the client. Depending on the airport you are flying from there may be an airport fee as well. Online Check-in for your Carnival cruise
Complete the FunPass check-in online at least 3 days prior to your cruise. This will speed up check-in for your Carnival Cruise from Miami. (verified October 2010)
Boarding Time for Carnival Cruises out of Miami
Boarding for your Carnival cruise starts at 12:30 PM. If possible get there early to avoid the lines. You must be checked-in at least 90 minutes prior to the scheduled cruise departure. (verified February 2011)
Required Travel Documentation
As of June 1, 2009 U.S. Citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that start and end from the same port) can still cruise with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID (children only need a birth certificate). Passports are required if you have to leave the cruise early and fly back to the U.S. Passports may also be required depending on the country your ship is visiting. Be sure to check the U.S. State Department's web site for up-to-date information. (verified February 2010)
